Two things from the City's April newsletter worth acting on this week, if you've got ten minutes.

1. Free compost, 100 litres per household

The City runs a spring compost giveaway every year using finished compost from the Green Cart program. It's free, but you have to book a pickup slot.

  • Booking opens: Monday, April 28, 2026
  • Pickup window: May 4–16
  • Pickup locations: Shepard landfill (south) or Spyhill landfill (north)
  • Limit: 100 litres per household (bring your own containers or bags)
  • Book at: calgary.ca/compost
Set a phone reminder for April 28. Spots fill fast.

2. Neighbour Day microgrant, up to $2,000 for a block party

You don't need the SHCA to throw a block party for Neighbour Day (June 20). The City actually funds them.

  • Applications open: April 15, 2026 (already live, apply whenever)
  • Block party permits: free, apply by May 31

If you've got 8–10 neighbours willing to chip in time, the grant covers food, supplies, a bouncy castle, whatever it takes. We'd love to have half a dozen Signal Hill blocks doing their own thing on top of our main event at Sienna Hills, that's what the day is supposed to look like.
