$50 Off a Rain Barrel, City Rebate Is Back, Two Spring Sales Left
If you registered for a free Branching Out tree this morning, or if you're just tired of dragging the hose around, the City's rain barrel rebate is the obvious companion program. It's open now, $50 back per barrel, up to three per household.
The quick version
- $50 rebate per rain barrel (flat rate, size doesn't matter)
- Max 3 rebates per household
- 3,500 rebates available city-wide, first-come, first-served
- Applications open now through October 31, 2026
- Receipts must be within 12 months of your application date
- Only the barrel itself qualifies, accessories, hoses, and stands don't
Two Green Calgary sale dates left
Green Calgary runs four Saturday sales each spring, 9 AM–1 PM, at four pickup locations across the city. Two are still ahead:
- Saturday, May 2, 9 AM to 1 PM
- Saturday, May 9, 9 AM to 1 PM
> 👉 Apply for the rebate at calgary.ca/rainbarrel > > 👉 Buy from Green Calgary
Why it makes sense for Signal Hill specifically
We're on the highest ridge in Calgary. West-facing yards bake. New trees from the Branching Out program need roughly 1 L per day on average for their first five years, that's about 60–80 L a week in year one. A 200 L barrel filled by a single thunderstorm covers a couple of weeks of tree watering without touching the tap.
It also helps in the years the City declares outdoor water restrictions (more common than not lately, see our note from January). A barrel of pre-collected rain isn't subject to Stage 1 or 2 outdoor-use limits.
A few rules and warnings
- Rainwater isn't potable. Don't drink it, don't use it for food prep without precautions. Water at the base of plants, not by overhead spraying onto edibles.
- Keep barrels secured around kids. A toddler can drown in surprisingly little water, most barrels come with a lockable lid for a reason.
- Empty before freeze-up. A full 200 L barrel that freezes solid will crack. Disconnect, drain, and store inverted by mid-October.
- Resales and private purchases don't qualify, the rebate needs a receipt from a recognised retailer.
Quick checklist if you're planting trees this spring
1. ☐ Pick up a barrel, Green Calgary (May 2 / May 9) or Golden Acre 2. ☐ Save the receipt 3. ☐ Apply for the $50 rebate at calgary.ca/rainbarrel 4. ☐ Set the barrel under a downspout with a soaker hose to your nearest tree or garden bed 5. ☐ Drain and invert it before mid-October
