The City of Calgary's free summer programs are back, and there's more on the list than most parents realize. This is the cheap, supervised, good version of "kids need something to do", and Signal Hill sits close to several of the venues.

Park n' Play, drop in, no registration, no fee

Who: kids ages 6–12. When: weekdays, 10 a.m.–3:30 p.m., across the summer. What it is: outdoor drop-in at a community greenspace with trained City staff. Crafts, games, active play, plus water play at some sites. Parents sign a form at the location and can drop off and pick up, your kid spends the day with peers and supervised activities, you don't pay a thing.

Bring: water bottle, healthy lunch + snack (no peanut/nut products), sunscreen, hat, running shoes. Same rules every day. Staff are First Aid / CPR trained.

City announces the 2026 location list closer to launch, check the Park n' Play page a week before you want to use it.

Wading pools + spray parks + splash pads

When summer hits, these are the move. Totally free, open to the public, first-come first-served. The City runs them weather-dependent (closed in poor air quality or storms, call 311 for cancellations).

Westhills and the broader SW have a handful within a short drive. The City's free outdoor amenities map lists them all.

Tennis & pickleball courts, public when not permitted

Any City tennis or pickleball court not reserved by a paid permit is free to use, first-come first-served. Bring your own paddle. SHCA's two pickleball courts at the rink slab are also free for SHCA members year-round (book at shca.ca/pages/facilities).

Mobile Skate & Scoot

Free drop-in for inline skates, skateboards, and scooters. Helmets mandatory, no registration. Locations rotate through the summer, check the City schedule.

Why we're publishing this

NPC James Runge flagged the free programs slate at the May board meeting, he made the case that we don't tell residents about them enough. Members pay $20/year; the City's already paid for these. Use them.
