If you walk Sirocco Drive in the next two weeks, you'll see flagging tape on a lot of trees. Here's what's going on.

What's happening

Calgary Parks and Urban Forestry is doing a large-scale removal along Sirocco Dr SW between Signal Hill Dr SW and Signature Way SW. About 66 trees will come out — all A and B class (the City's smaller-tree categories). That includes:

  • Apples
  • Schubert chokecherries
  • Japanese tree lilacs
  • Columnar aspens
Every tree being removed has been posted or wrapped in flagging tape so it's identifiable in advance.

When

The City has the work scheduled for the week of June 15, 2026. Expect noise, chippers, and lane disruption along that stretch during work hours.

Why these particular trees

The City's removing only assets that meet the threshold for removal on health grounds — these aren't healthy trees being cleared for convenience. Urban Forestry assesses every public tree on a regular cycle; the ones flagged here are at the point where keeping them poses more risk (falling limbs, disease spread, structural failure) than the benefit of leaving them standing.

What about replanting?

The planting team is still discussing whether and what to replant — species, count, timing. Once there's a decision, the Community Association will get an update and we'll pass it along here.
