Hello neighbours,

As the warm weather settles in, I wanted to take a moment to say thank you and to share a little of what your Board has been up to. Our last meeting of the year was held in June. In previous Junes we have kept things informal, with a light agenda and a shared meal to thank everyone for their efforts. This year was a little different. There was so much that needed our attention that, even as we aimed for a relaxed evening, the work came at us full bore.

A small experiment that worked

At our previous meeting we decided to test expanding what we offer at the Signal Hill Community Centre. We had planned an outdoor meeting by the gazebo, weather permitting. As is often the case, the weather had other ideas, so we moved into the changeroom area by the rink. It worked quite well. Since then, a few events have used that same space to support outdoor rentals.

A good run of events

We have also held some successful events. The Parade of Garage Sales is low cost and yet effective. This year we did not use the parking lot on site, but we did create the map, and it was well used across the community to find those precious deals that make this a neighbourhood favourite.

In spite of the threat of inclement weather, we held our Neighbour Day event on site. Were you there? I enjoyed meeting a number of you that afternoon. Many Board members were able to attend these events too. I hope you had a chance to share some time with them, and rest assured they will pass your input along.

Quiet work over the summer

As I have mentioned in past years, while the whole Board does not meet over the summer, many members serving on the Engagement, Governance, and Community Life Committees keep doing the preparation work behind the scenes.

Would you like to join us?

One of those committees is the Nominations Committee. It looks ahead to the Board's needs for the coming year and the shape of the Board itself. I have always believed you experience so much more in life as a volunteer, and that the best place to anchor that is right where you live. If serving on the Board sounds like you, reach out and let us learn what you could bring to Signal Hill. Before our Annual General Meeting, the Nominations Committee will prepare a slate of nominees to recommend to the members of the Association.
