We're into the home stretch of summer, right when the days get long and the ideas run short. Good news: the City of Calgary has plenty on, and a lot of it is free.

Free drop-ins, no registration needed

Show up and join in, most of these cost nothing:

  • Park 'n' Play — supervised field games, creative activities, and guest speakers for kids ages 6 to 12.
  • Mobile Skate & Scoot and Skate Spot lessons — drop-in wheeled fun, all ages and skill levels welcome.
  • Nature walks and guided tree walks in parks across the city, plus Birding Breaks at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and Wetland Wonders at Ralph Klein Park.
  • LEAD, LEAD 2.0, and Nature LEAD — for youth 11 to 15 who want to build confidence and earn a leadership certificate with hands-on community experience.
Dates and locations are on the City's website, search "free summer activities" at calgary.ca.

Still need a camp? A few are close by

The City still has affordable day-camp spots open for late July and August, and several of the locations are a short drive from Signal Hill:

  • Killarney Aquatic & Recreation Centre
  • Stu Peppard Arena
  • Optimist Arena
  • Southland Leisure Centre
Themes include Rec Adventures, Field Sports, Swim to Survive, and Sports camps. Browse what's left and register at calgary.ca under "Summer camps."

Closer to home

Don't forget our own backyard, either. The rink slab courts are open for pickleball and basketball, and there's free beginner disc golf in the park on August 1. A full summer, without leaving the neighbourhood.
