Why it matters
The councillor's office says the City faces real money and infrastructure limits. Calgary has grown fast, and in many areas the roads, utilities and services that growth needs haven't kept up. The budget will decide which infrastructure comes first, what level of service Calgarians get, and how the City pays for it. The town hall is for questions and for telling the office where you'd protect services, where you'd look for savings, and what you'd invest in.
Two things on the table that matter in Signal Hill
Traffic safety money. In September, the councillor put forward an amendment to the City's Safer Mobility Plan. It puts a $20 million a year investment in proven traffic safety fixes into the budget discussion. The City estimates that would fix about 300 high-risk locations a year and cut the time to work through its known high-risk list from about ten years to five. Whether it survives budget deliberations is one of the decisions on the table. If there's an intersection near you that you'd want on that list, say so at the town hall. The Calgary Plan. The City is drafting the Calgary Plan, which will sit at the top of its planning rules and guide how the city grows for decades. The councillor's office has said it's concerned the draft requires local area plans to follow citywide direction, with too little room for local context. In other words, it treats a quiet residential street the same as the land around an LRT station. That's a planning issue rather than a budget one, but it's likely to come up.
